Craigslist Combats Hijacked Accounts!

Posted on October 22, 2010

Craigslist is Combating Hijacked Accounts

by Requesting Phone or Text Verification

While posting listings on Craigslist.org website for several agents this afternoon, I was faced with the following message:

" To help enforce our terms of use, craigslist requires an account, verified by phone, for posting in certain categories. Terms of use violations will be subject to account suspension and blacklisting of the phone number used to verify the account.

After entering your phone number below, you will receive an automated call or text message and an authorization code will be provided to you.

Enter this authorization code on the next page, and your account will be verified."

Yep, this is a legitimate message! How do I know?

I was logged into the authentic Craigslist.org website.

Once I received the text & input the correct code as provided by Craigslist, I could proceed to posting ads normally.

It could just be that I was posting under more than one account from the same IP address, so hopefully this means that Craigslist is looking out for fraud & spam, which is a good thing for everyone!

Just wanted to make sure you were all aware of this legitimate method Craigslist is trying to use to combat hijacked accounts! But if you are ever concerned that a suspicious pop-up or email may be a phishing attempt, please refer back to my previous blog: Gone Phishing

UPDATE: 11/5/10 During the past few days, several agents from our office have been experiencing difficulties posting real estate ads to Craigslist. It looks like Craigslist may be blocking our IP Address or specific email addresses. We're not sure why, but perhaps for overuse - posting too many times in one section in violation of their "terms of use".
We're still trying to find out what has happened and if there is anything we can do to resolve the issue. Emails to Craigslist have not been returned as of yet.
We will try to let you know what we find out as soon as we can!

UPDATE: 12/5/10 Well, we're still not entirely sure why, but we are once again able to post all ads from the office IP address. Proceed as normal!

You can still post to Craigslist... however, do not log into your account. Just post the ad in the correct section. You will then be sent an email to verify and publish your ad. it's just an extra step.

I can't log into my Craigslist account to post my listings. I have verified my account by phone. Help!
